Name Origins & Meaning

This section provides a list of some of our families first and middle names with their meanings, origins, common spellings and nicknames where known.

In some countries like Italy it was (and still is) traditional for the first born son to be named after the paternal grand-father and the first born daughter to be named after the maternal grand-mother, the second born son would be named after the maternal grandfather, the second born daughter, the paternal grandmother, and so on... This tradition is continued by some Anglo-Italian families, often using the English derivatives of the Italian names.

In the UK, it was not uncommon for children to be named after their parents or a venerated relative. Their are several families whose members contain several generations with the same first name like the Dunn's and the Rogers whose first born son's were always named 'Philip Dadd'. Needless to say, this can make researching the family tree a somewhat confusing and frustrating exercise!

Please note, much of this information was gathered via searches on the internet and word of mouth so cannot be considered as reliable. Click on a letter below to browse the names!
